Brock Clarke—our dear old fiction editor who left UC for a frozen northern region—is returning to the Nati for one night only. His new novel, Exley, is just out, and this coming Monday (October 11) at 7 pm, he will read from the book at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Rookwood Pavilion. Join us for the event and drinks at some slightly frightening dive afterward. (Brock’s website has links to reviews of the novel, and reading tour dates too.)
And now some Exley-related bonus material: For his last issue of Cincinnati Review, Brock selected Charles Lamar Phillips’s essay “Exley in Iowa,” an intrepid piece about the author of A Fan’s Notes and his uneasy stint teaching at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. You can read it—in all its expletive-filled glory—in our winter issue, out next month. Note: a year’s subscription is only fifteen slips of greenish-gray paper with ones on them.
