Managing Editor Lisa Ampleman: In Issue 19.1, we featured the art of Galina Shevchenko, a “Moscow born, Chicago based” multimedia artist whose work is experiential. As she put it in her artist’s statement in the issue, “I work across multiple materialities as well as in projection and augmentation: on screens, in video monitors, via mobile devices. I draw, digitize, animate, laser-cut plastic, plasma-cut steel, embroider, print, dye, audio score, construct, project.”
We realize that reproducing images from some of her exhibitions in our magazine is woefully insufficient to convey her aesthetic, and we encourage you to visit her website to see videos of exhibitions in action.
We also wanted to hear more about Galina’s approaches to motherhood (a subject in several of her shows) and art, and Drama Editor Brant Russell suggested a conversation between her and Daria Zholnerova, a stage director and graduate student at the University of Cincinnati, who is originally from Saint Petersburg, Russia.
We’ve excerpted their conversation in the video below; our thanks to both Galina and Daria for taking the time to chat and share it with us!
